Since I last wrote, I had the pleasure of hosting a friend from Germany for a week. It was lovely to reminisce with someone who knew me in Bonn and to show her my life in Batam. Now I have someone far away who understands what I mean when I say "the coconuts are trying to migrate again"...
Before she came, I was worried that she would be bored because I had to work every day and there's not much to do in Batam. As it turned out, we had nowhere near enough time to get everything done we wanted to, or to be bored! The highlight of her stay (for me anyway!) was our mini getaway to Bintan, an island just a 60min ferry trip east of Batam. We looked around some old buildings, took photos of very big statues, and then headed to a quiet beach resort for 24hrs of downtime.... (my apologies for the disastrous layout)
Permission to skip the tedious staff meeting? Check! Lugagge? Check! Happy Travelers ready to get the bleep out of Batam? Check!
Upon arrival in the capital of Bintan, Tanjung Pinang, we headed straight to a local restaurant serving Nasi Padang. Various dishes of increasing spiciness are served all at once and you are just charged for what you eat. My favourite dish is Beef Rendang, which is like beef jerky (dry beef)
but in a unique thick spicy sauce (not pictured).

We stayed the night in Tanjung Pinang and then ventured to a little island about twenty minutes away by boat. Sorry...I'm not the kind of person who cares to remember the names of random places.

These shots were taken from the boat that got us to the island.
This little island is home to many old buildings, which were all yellow. Yes, that is the extent of my intellectual knowledge about this place... oh oh oh, I can also tell you that a king who wrote a poem is buried there.
You're welcome.

What happened next?
Smiles all round.

Here are the large statues I mentioned before.
Very large.
Very colourful.
Enjoy...
And then finally, we made it to paradise!
Our resort was called "Agro"
but luckily we didn't experience any! Ha.
Lovely weekend....followed by a major case of the Mondays when we returned to reality.

Time to go!

Isn't it always the way, that the times really worthy of being recorded, written about or reflected upon, are the times when it's really hard to find the time? I have been home visiting family and friends, frantically trying to see everyone and also get last minute but very important things taken care of. Despite the stress of being such a busy bee, I have loved every minute of being here and catching up with the people I love. It is a confusing state I find myself in, feeling so sad to be going so far away from home, yet still wanting to do it, needing to in fact. Tomorrow I travel to see a dear friend (I'd say that even if she wasn't driving me to the airport) and her far too adorable son. On wednesday I fly, by thursday afternoon I'll be in Singapore, and on saturday I will arrive in Batam. Let the traveling commence!

free to go

A few months ago I was longing to leave Germany. Although that desire clearly had something to do with ending an eight-year relationship, it also had a lot to do with the weather! I was just daydreaming of beaches, picturing myself backpacking around NZ, pulling pints and picking fruit. It was fun to imagine the possibilities, but in reality I couldn’t afford to go anywhere for a while, so I figured I’d just stay put and save some pennies while grumbling my way through another cold dark wet winter in Bonn. I felt positive however, that there was something waiting for me, something I was destined to see or do. All my daydreams seemed unrealistic and I felt like I was being laughed at, as though something bigger than me and my tiny perspective was at work behind the scenes, smirking at me and my clichéd thoughts of escape. When I accepted the job in Batam it felt good. Unlike my previous daydreams, teaching in Indonesia had a weight to it, a purpose and a direction. I don’t know wh...
