New Year Resolutions

The last time I made a firm new year's resolution and stuck to it was in 2006. I gave up all carbonated beverages for the year. I did it because I was so ashamed of my British teeth, and I did it because fizzy drinks make me bloated. I also did it to overcome my minor addiction to buying Cherry Cokes from the drinks machine outside my place of work. I was very proud of myself for sticking to that resolution for the whole year, minus one minor lapse in July when I sipped some excess Mr Pibb off the top of Jeff's drink at Pizza Shuttle...

This year I have decided to make up for lost time by having multiple new year resolutions, which are...

1) Learn Indonesian! It appears to be a simple language to learn the basics of, and my kids love it when I tell them what words I have learned, so I have no excuse not to learn it.

2) Read at least two books each month, one for pleasure, one for work-related research.

3) Practice yoga every day. I could easily just bend over and touch my toes and call it good, but obviously my intention is to do a proper job!

4) Write every day for myself. The main goal behind this resolution is to produce something publishable some day, but it's also an activity that keeps me sane, even if what I write may not always be coherent!

What are your resolutions for the new year?

  1. Great choices m'dear.
I would love to embark on the daily yoga journey with you, so I will try to accompany you from afar whenever I can. I've also started recording things in more detail each day. Not a lame teenypop diary, but facts, quotes and actions from each day. It helps my memory as well - something I've been increasingly concerned over.

My 52 books in 52 weeks has already failed. I started off with an awful book and thus feel no need to catch up. Oh well. I back your play!

  2. I meant to comment on this ages ago. I love your resolutions! They will keep you mentally and physically happy and that goes a long way toward actual happiness.
    Good luck! Keep us updated!

I love getting rid of stuff. I have already donated 7 bin bags of clothes and I'm not done! To use my Mum's terminology (and encouragement), I am taking a brutal approach to deciding what to take with me to Batam. If it's not essential and it doesn't have long-term sentimental value, it's got no chance. My goal is to take just one suitcase with me, so being brutal is the only way!

Where's your manners?

I've got the back to work blues after a week's holiday. After one hour back at work, I'd counted how many work days are left this year; approximately 87. I know that's actually not much, but right now it feels like a death sentence. I have no motivation to plan for teaching 60 students, or to prepare seminars for 30 teachers, mainly because no-one cares what I'm doing here, or knows how much work goes into creating a course for teachers who get paid so little for the job they do that most of them (quite rightly to be fair) put professional development very low on their list of priorities.  I realise I sound like a grumpy child. That's what arriving at work to find that my desk had been moved did to me. My back is to the window (a window to the hallway), exactly where I didn't want to be, and the previous teacher's junk has been left in a dusty pile on the floor for me to clean up.  If only it was that simple... Wanna know what else is annoyi...
